Basketball game action ahead of Spurs and Timberwolves NBA matchup

NBA: Spurs host a Wolves side without Edwards

Two losses, then three wins

San Antonio did not start well. The Spurs dropped their first two games, then stopped dropping them. Their latest win came Wednesday at Utah, 117-111 in overtime, and it needed everything Victor Wembanyama had: 36 points and 14 rebounds.

Devin Vassell took over late. He finished with 21, 12 of them in the fourth quarter and the extra period. De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle each added 14, and Dylan Harper had 13. The decisive stretch came in overtime, when the Spurs ripped off a 12-0 run and forced four turnovers. Wembanyama pointed to the defence afterwards and said the group was tired of its own mistakes.

Saturday’s game against Minnesota opens a three-game stand at home. Utah comes to San Antonio on Monday and Dallas follows on Wednesday.

Minnesota is on the second night of a back-to-back

The Timberwolves arrive off a 127-101 win over the Clippers on Friday. LaMelo Ball led them with 24 points, Jaden McDaniels scored 23, Bones Hyland 19 and Ayo Dosunmu 15, while Rudy Gobert pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Hyland said the team had found its confidence again and was moving the ball better after a poor stretch.

Anthony Edwards is not part of that. He had knee surgery on Thursday and could be out for up to two months. Only days earlier he scored 47 in an overtime defeat at Cleveland, and he opened the season with a franchise-record 133 points through four games. Coach Chris Finch says the scoring will have to come from the whole roster now.

Both teams are also opening their NBA Cup West Group B schedule, so the night carries a little more than a regular-season game.
