A jersey built for the tour against the All Blacks
Nike and SA Rugby launched a new Springboks jersey on Wednesday. It will be worn during the Castle Double Malt Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Tour, the four-Test series against the All Blacks.
The shirt goes on sale on Thursday 6 August. The Springboks are due to play their first Test against New Zealand soon after. It is the first series between the two nations in 30 years.
Try it for $0.99.
The anthem lyrics on the chest
The design hides an all-over pattern. It uses the words of Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika, the national anthem, arranged in the shape of the South African flag.
The words appear in the country’s five languages: Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho, Afrikaans and English. SA Rugby says it is a symbol of the voices and stories that make up the nation.
A jersey for the four Tests only
Rian Oberholzer, SA Rugby’s boss, praised Nike’s work. The jersey will be used only for the four Tests on tour, then it will disappear.
