Cup ties called off, women’s Liga to pause
Spanish football has stopped for a national tragedy. Two trains collided on Wednesday at 8:54 am on the high-speed line between Madrid and Andalusia, about 150 kilometres south of the capital, near Toledo.
Spanish civil protection first reported at least 50 dead and 176 injured. The toll has since risen to 64 dead and 179 injured, according to RMC Sport.
The Spanish federation reacted by postponing all 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. The women’s Liga went further for the weekend. A minute of silence will be observed before every match of round nine: four games on Saturday, three on Sunday and one on Monday. The league said clubs, players, referees and supporters in the stadiums would join in the tribute.

A united sporting world, and an angry voice
Real Madrid and Barcelona both posted messages for the victims, as did basketball clubs such as Murcia and Baskonia. Rafael Nadal added his own message of support. Sevilla held a minute of silence at the end of its training session.
Marcos Llorente went beyond condolences. He turned on the country’s transport minister after what he called another fatal accident, telling him that posting on social media is not his job. The outburst showed how raw the mood is.
The casualty figures are still moving, so the fixture list may change again.
