Football: Sounders Face Last-Place Sporting KC on a Roll

Seattle finally has some air

An eight-game losing spell nearly sank the Seattle Sounders’ season. Now they are on a two-game winning streak and meet last-place Sporting Kansas City on Thursday night. At 9-9-8 and 35 points, Seattle sits ninth in the Western Conference, with the playoff race tight enough to matter.

Defender Jackson Ragen thinks the slump was a wave that has passed. “We had a really good start to the season and then a bad spell that lasted way too long for this club,” he said. “Now, we’re getting back into form.”

Forward Jordan Morris has his own reason to smile. He scored his first goal since April 25 and became the club’s all-time regular-season leader with 73, passing Raul Ruidiaz. “It’s the right time of year to start building that momentum,” Morris said.

A trade that is paying off

Dejan Joveljic has three goals in four games since Seattle landed him from Sporting KC in a $6 million trade in late August. Facing his old club adds a little spice to the night.

Sporting KC are not folding

Kansas City is 6-17-3 with 21 points, dead last. Even so, the mood in camp has lifted after a 2-0 win over Houston, the club’s first clean sheet of the season. Goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland made five saves, and Andre Luiz had a goal and an assist.

Coach Raphael Wicky said he was “very pleased” with what he saw and pointed to a stretch of competitive performances. “Over the last weeks or even since the break, besides maybe two games, we’ve shown that we’re competitive with most of the teams,” Wicky said.
