A second game added
Sophia Wilson will miss two matches, not one. The NWSL reviewed her red card from October 3 and upgraded the penalty to a major game misconduct, which tacked a second suspension game onto the automatic ban. The Portland Thorns forward was sent off in the 22nd minute of a 4-2 loss to the Boston Legacy after pulling the hair of defender Lais Araujo.
The first match was already served under the standard red-card rule. The extra game means Wilson sits out the October 18 meeting with Bay FC and the October 23 trip against the North Carolina Courage.

The coach’s view
Thorns coach Robert Vilahamn did not dispute the ruling, though he gave context. He said Wilson reacted after Araujo pulled her shirt, and that the 26-year-old apologized and accepts responsibility. “The rule is tough but that’s the rule,” Vilahamn said.
Why Portland will feel it
This is a costly pair of absences. Wilson ranks third in the league with 13 goals and has five assists in 27 matches, 24 of them starts. She won the 2022 league MVP award, made the Best XI in 2022, 2023 and 2024, and led Portland to the 2022 championship. She also has an Olympic gold medal from the 2024 Games.
Portland now has to find its goals elsewhere for two games while Wilson watches from the stands.
