NBA: Trail Blazers land Sochan on one-year deal

Sochan lands in Portland

Twenty-three years old, and Jeremy Sochan already owns a title ring and a new address. The wing has agreed a one-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. It’s official.

He arrives as a free agent, on a contract worth about 2.6 million dollars that isn’t fully guaranteed. Low risk, obvious logic for Oregon.

What Portland buys is the defense. Sochan can switch across positions and hold his ground. That has always been his selling point.

A messy road to here

Nothing about last season ran smoothly for him. San Antonio waived him in February. Two days later, New York scooped him up. He closed the year with the Knicks, and that group went on to win it all.

The scoring stays modest, 9.9 points and 5.4 rebounds a night across his career. Coaches don’t chase him for buckets. They chase him for the effort on the other end, and Portland is betting that translates.

What role in Portland?

The Blazers are stacking a young, physical roster, and Sochan slots right into that idea. How many minutes he sees once the season tips off is the only real question.
