Montreal sorts out its final four
Rain wiped out Monday’s schedule at the National Bank Open, so Montreal crammed all four quarterfinals into Tuesday. By the end of the night the semifinal field was set. Ben Shelton, Learner Tien, Brandon Nakashima and Rafael Jodar advanced to the last four.
Shelton keeps rolling. The defending champion beat Jakub Mensik and still has not dropped a set through his title defense. Tien closed the evening session with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Spain’s Daniel Merida.

Two first-timers crash the party
Nakashima and Jodar each reached the first Masters 1000 semifinal of their careers. Jodar knocked out Arthur Fils to keep an eye-catching week going in Canada. Nakashima booked his place earlier in the round to complete the quartet.
The two will meet in Wednesday’s opening semifinal at 6 p.m., with Shelton facing fellow American Tien in the match that follows.
What comes next
Shelton carries both the form and the pedigree into the weekend as he chases back-to-back Montreal titles. Tien, seeded 12th, has already turned this into the best result of his young career at the 1000 level. The two semifinal winners meet in Thursday’s final.
