Tennis: Shelton sees off Norrie in straight sets in Paris

A clean start under the lights

Ben Shelton did not need long. The third seed opened the night session on Central court at the Rolex Paris Masters on Tuesday and beat Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4.

It was his first match of the week. As a top seed he started in the second round, while Norrie had already played on Monday, coming through a three-set match against Matteo Arnaldi, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. The Briton could not repeat that against the American.

An open draw in Nanterre

Shelton arrives in a tournament short of its biggest names. Jannik Sinner, last year’s champion, is absent because of a knee problem, and that leaves Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev as the principal favourites. Zverev became world number one on Monday and begins his own tournament on Wednesday against Lorenzo Musetti.

A farewell ceremony for Gaël Monfils followed his match on Central, and Casper Ruud and Rafael Jodar were scheduled to close the night session.
