An extension offer is on the table
According to Tyc Sport, the Argentine federation has formally put a contract extension offer to Lionel Scaloni. His current deal runs until December 2026. The AFA are offering two more years, taking it through to the 2028 Copa America. An extra option would stretch the commitment to the 2030 World Cup.
Scaloni has not given a final answer yet, but talks have started with his camp. The AFA are said to be confident the negotiations will end well, again according to Tyc Sport. Nothing has been signed, but the mood around the coach remains upbeat after eight years of almost non-stop success.

A record that speaks for itself
Since taking charge in 2018, Scaloni has won the 2022 World Cup and two Copa Americas. He also led Argentina to the final of the latest edition of the continental tournament. It is a record that explains why the federation are keen to lock him in rather than risk losing him after the next World Cup.
Few managers stay this long in charge of a major South American nation. Eight years in the job is already a rarity in Argentine football, where change is usually the default, especially after a world title that could easily have opened the door to a move into European club football.
Three friendlies before any decision
For now, Scaloni has three friendlies to prepare: Bolivia on 30 September, Burkina Faso on 3 October, then Benin on 6 October, all in Buenos Aires. They should give him a proper chance to test his squad before he turns his attention to his own future and the next phase of a cycle that began after the 2022 triumph.
