A call from Brazil
Sao Paulo have made contact with Jamie Vardy. The news comes from Fabrizio Romano and was reported on Monday lunchtime. The Brazilian club want to persuade the English striker to join the Brasileirao.
Vardy is a free agent. He left Cremonese this summer after a mixed season in Serie A. At 39, he has yet to decide on the next move in his career and is still weighing up several options, according to the same source.

England had looked like the obvious route
Until now, Vardy’s name had mainly been doing the rounds in England. West Ham had asked about his situation. The Hammers were ready to step in if their pursuit of Troy Parrott collapsed.
Sao Paulo’s approach changes the picture. It opens up a far more unusual option for a player who had only known football in England before his spell in Italy. Vardy joined Leicester in 2012 from the fifth tier of English football. He went on to win the Premier League in 2016 and finish as the division’s top scorer in 2020.
Nothing signed yet
No deal has been mentioned at this stage. Sao Paulo are only at the contact phase. The Brazilian club still have work to do, and Vardy has not made any public preference clear.
The Brazilian league is already into its season, which gives the club a chance to strengthen up front. The question is whether a 39-year-old used to the European schedule will be tempted to cross the Atlantic.
