Two mistakes, two goals, one very long night for Rob Holding
Twenty-seven minutes in, the Rapids tried to play out from the back the way they have been coached to. Reggie Cannon switched the ball across to Holding, who took a touch and looked to roll it back to Nico Hansen. The touch went nowhere near where he wanted it. Onni Valakari read it, stole in, and beat Hansen.
Eight minutes later it happened again. Elias Achouri headed a loose ball into the box, straight into Holding’s zone, and the English defender could not bring it down. Achouri collected the scraps himself and finished from the middle.

Three goals for a side that had gone 14 games without them
Gabriel Pirani made it three on 71 minutes, tucking away a Marcus Ingvartsen pass. San Diego had not put three past anyone since the 3-3 home draw with FC Cincinnati on 16 May. Three months and change of blunt football, ended in one evening.
CJ dos Santos handled the other end. Two saves, the pick of them off Paxten Aaronson on 56 minutes, and a fourth clean sheet of the year for the Portuguese keeper.
Colorado were not without openings. Aaronson dragged one wide in first-half stoppage time, and Luca Bombino had Hansen scrambling shortly after the opener.
27 points against 28, and only one side feeling good about it
San Diego climb to 27 points, seven wins, eight losses, six draws. The California club are in their second MLS season and still very much alive in the playoff picture.
Colorado had won three in a row before kickoff. They sit on 28 points from 21 games, nine wins, eleven losses, one draw, which keeps them a single point clear of the team that just took them apart.
