Lower-body injury from the Vegas loss
The Pittsburgh Penguins placed defenseman Samuel Girard on injured reserve Saturday. The 28-year-old picked up a lower-body injury in the 6-2 road loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on October 17.
Girard has one goal and six assists in nine games this season. It is his first full year in Pittsburgh, after the club acquired him from Colorado in a February 24 trade.

A veteran of 617 NHL games
He arrives with a résumé that goes beyond the points column. Girard won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022 and has 249 points, 38 goals and 211 assists, in 617 games across Nashville, Colorado and Pittsburgh.
To fill the roster spot, the Penguins recalled forward Avery Hayes, 24, from their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Hayes made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh last season and scored five goals in 16 games.
