Winning return to Washington
Ten aces conceded. And still, Liudmila Samsonova found a way to beat Madison Keys in the first round of the DC Open. 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Russian knows the place well. She won it in 2022. After dropping the opening set, she tightened up on her first serve. 80% of points behind it, 35 from 44. Keys hit hard, but far too often it was all for nothing.

The rest of the draw had a calmer night. Emma Navarro beat Sofia Kenin 6-3, 7-5. Leylah Fernandez saw off Magda Linette 6-1, 6-4. Clean. Quick.
Ashlyn Krueger, Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Janice Tjen also move on. The first round has mostly backed its seeds, with one exception. Keys, the sixth seed, is out at the first hurdle.
Volynets hangs on in Memphis
Elsewhere, Katie Volynets edged Swiss player Viktorija Golubic 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (3). She was 0-3 down in the deciding set. Eight double faults on the other side. Volynets dug in and closed it out in the tiebreak.
