Football: Sam Kerr hits 80 NWSL goals in Gotham win

Twenty-two seconds, then a comeback

Amelia White scored for the Kansas City Current 22 seconds into the match, matching an NWSL record and ending Gotham’s shutout run at 307 minutes across three games. Croix Bethune supplied the pass, her league-leading ninth assist.

Gotham hit back inside a quarter of an hour. Midge Purce levelled in the 13th minute. Sam Kerr took a pass from Jaedyn Shaw on the left and tucked her finish away in the 41st for 2-1 at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Nobody scored again.

Eighty, and nobody else has got there

Kerr’s goal was her 80th in NWSL regular-season play. No player had reached that mark before. It was also her 31st for Gotham, making the Australian the club’s all-time leading scorer at a team she joined well into her career.

Gotham climb to 13-3-4 and stretch an unbeaten run to eight matches. Kansas City slip to 9-8-3. The Current thought they had lost defender Elizabeth Ball to a 27th-minute red card for a foul on Jordynn Dudley after a corner, then got her back when a video review downgraded the call to a yellow. Vanessa DiBernardo started for the first time since returning from maternity leave.

San Diego and Denver drew 1-1. Melanie Barcenas opened with a left-footed effort from distance in the 35th minute, Yazmeen Ryan headed in Janine Sonis’ cross in the 58th. Seattle beat Chicago 1-0 through Maddie Mercado’s rebound in the 53rd, Claudia Dickey collecting a fifth clean sheet. The Stars, winless in six and now 4-14-1, played under interim coach Karina Baez after parting with Marin Sjogren.
