MLB: Sam Fuld turns down the A’s top baseball job

The A’s swing and miss on their first choice

Sam Fuld said no. According to an ESPN report on Saturday, the Phillies executive turned down the Athletics’ offer to run their baseball operations, and the search for a president of baseball operations goes on.

Fuld currently serves as the Phillies’ president of business operations, and he reportedly stays in that seat. For a franchise that has spent the year looking for direction, losing the person it wanted most is a rough way to start an offseason.

The next name is already circulating. ESPN reports that Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Taylor Smith is a top candidate for the job.

What the next hire inherits

The A’s fired general manager David Forst in August, with the team sitting on a 64-98 finish. Their last winning season came in 2021, and their last playoff appearance was in 2020, when they reached the American League Division Series.

The setting is just as unsettled. The club plays its home games in Sacramento, California, and is scheduled to move into a stadium under construction in Las Vegas for the 2028 season. Whoever lands the job will build a roster in a temporary home while the permanent one goes up.

That is a hard pitch to a candidate who already holds a senior role elsewhere, which may explain why Fuld stayed put. Until the A’s fill the chair, the front office remains without a clear leader heading into the winter.
