UFC: Salkilld chokes out Gamrot in the first round

Salkilld makes a statement in his first headliner

In his first UFC main event, Quillan Salkilld did not blink. Last night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, the Australian submitted Mateusz Gamrot with a rear-naked choke in the opening round. It was a cold-blooded display from a fighter very few would have tipped for this stage a year ago.

The result carries real weight. Gamrot, a veteran ranked in the lightweight top 10, had long been one of the division’s yardsticks. To see him folded so quickly on the mat, in the area where he normally does his best work as a wrestler, tells you plenty about the gap Salkilld has already created.

Four straight first-round finishes

This win extends an unusual run. Salkilld now has four consecutive first-round finishes. In a lightweight division this stacked, ending that many fights before round two is no small feat.

Not long after, the Australian called for a top-five opponent. It’s not a crazy ask. Beating a fighter of Gamrot’s level usually gets you through the door to the sharp end of the division, where title shots start to come into focus.

A division on the move

The lightweight division is in a period of change. The established names are having to deal with a hungry new wave, fighters who can end it fast and have no interest in dragging it out over five rounds.

Salkilld has put himself right in that conversation. Now he needs to prove it against a top-five name, the real test.
