That was all Elena Rybakina needed in the fourth round. She has not dropped a set in New York. Win this one and the semi-finals are not the only prize: Aryna Sabalenka loses top spot in the WTA rankings, and the Kazakh, who took the Australian Open in January, takes it.

Zheng Qinwen arrived by a far uglier route. Elbow surgery, a fall out of the top 100, then qualifying just to reach the main draw. Seven wins later she is in the quarter-finals, and two of them defy explanation. Down 5-0 to Madison Keys, she came back. Down 5-0 to Iga Swiatek, she came back again.

Rybakina holds the head-to-head 4-1. Their match opens the day session on Arthur Ashe Stadium at 11:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday 9 September, 5.30pm in central Europe.
