MLS: Ryan Gauld writes his name into Whitecaps history

A first for Vancouver in the record books

Ryan Gauld scored his 50th career goal for the Vancouver Whitecaps overnight in the 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy. It was his third of the season, and it makes the Scot the first player in club history to reach 50 goals and 50 assists since the Whitecaps joined MLS.

The strike came in the 57th minute after a high turnover. Gauld pounced on a loose pass from Galaxy defender Jakob Glesnes just outside the box, weaved through traffic and whipped a left-foot shot into the far side netting. Two minutes earlier, JT Marcinkowski had denied him with a header and then a left-foot effort from the edge of the area.

Vancouver stay on top in the West

Brian White got the ball rolling in the eighth minute after being set up by Thomas Muller. The German picked up a throw-in and clipped a delicate ball into White, who had made the run into the right side of the box and bent a right-foot finish into the top-right corner. That was the American striker’s 14th goal of the season.

Bruno Caicedo wrapped things up in the 90th minute from the spot after Emiro Garces brought down Rayan Elloumi. Marcinkowski got a touch, but not enough to keep it out as the ball crept over the line by about a foot. The California keeper finished with six saves.

Yohei Takaoka made five at the other end, including a sharp double stop in the 18th minute from Kyogo Furuhashi and then Pablo Ruiz. It was his 10th clean sheet of the season.

The Galaxy sink further as the gap at the top grows

Vancouver (14-5-4, 46 points) remain three points clear of the Houston Dynamo at the top of the Western Conference. Results like this, with a clean sheet attached, change the feel of the run-in.

Los Angeles (7-10-8, 29 points) are still paying for an uneven season and once the second goal went in, they never really troubled the home defense. With 29 points from 25 matches, the club are miles off the pace being set by the conference leaders.
