Rome Masters 1000: Jannik Sinner sweeps past Rublev and sets another record!

Sinner breaks a Djokovic record and keeps rolling in Rome

In Rome, it has been all about Jannik Sinner since the start of the week. Once again on Thursday, the Italian delivered in front of his home crowd at the Foro Italico, cruising through in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

The world No. 1 never really gave his opponent a chance to breathe. Right from the start, Sinner set the tone from the baseline and took control of the rallies. There was precious little the man across the net could do, with the Italian looking in complete command from first point to last.

The Rome crowd, fully behind him, roared every point as if the tournament were already over.

Djokovic left behind

This win does not just send him into the semi-finals. It also hands him another major record.

Sinner has now put together 32 straight Masters 1000 wins, a run nobody had managed before. Novak Djokovic held the previous mark with 31 in a row, set back in 2011.

For months now, the Italian has been tearing through top-level events without ever really hitting a wall. His run began in Paris-Bercy and has carried on this season across the biggest dates in the US and Europe.

He could still take another Djokovic record if he lifts the trophy in Rome over the next few days.

Always in control

What stands out most about Sinner right now is how easy he makes it look when the heat is on.

Since losing in Doha in February, nobody has managed to stop him. Match after match, he looks like he is one step ahead, even when the rallies drag on or the pressure ramps up.

On Friday, he will try to keep the streak going in the semi-finals against Daniil Medvedev or the young Spaniard Martin Landaluce, the tournament’s surprise package.
