An 11-year-old signs for the paddock’s most productive academy
Red Bull confirmed this morning that Robin Raikkonen, son of the 2007 world champion, has joined its junior team. The Finn turns his attention to the programme properly in 2027. He is 11 years old and races under the nickname Ace.
He has been karting since early childhood and already has results in Rotax and WSK series, the two ladders most European single-seater careers still begin on. The Raikkonen family attended the Italian Grand Prix as guests of Red Bull, and the signature followed shortly after.

What Red Bull says it is signing
Team principal Laurent Mekies framed the deal around patience rather than immediate results. “Robin has already demonstrated exceptional ability in karting,” he said. “His speed, racecraft and natural talent have established him as one of the most promising young drivers in his age group. At the same time, he impresses with his maturity, his calm approach and his clear focus on driving.”
Mekies added that the plan is to “develop him step by step, without placing any unnecessary pressure on his shoulders”, and that the team intends to give him time, support and resources rather than a deadline. The wording matters. Red Bull’s junior scheme has a long record of dropping drivers who stall at Formula 3 or Formula 2 level, and an 11-year-old signing carries a decade of development risk before anything is proven.
The name he carries
Kimi Raikkonen won the 2007 title with Ferrari by a single point, taking the championship at Interlagos after Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso had spent the season trading the lead. He finished with 21 grand prix wins and 103 podiums before stopping at the end of 2021, and he still holds the record for the most race starts in the sport’s history.
His own reaction leaned on the programme’s alumni list. “Red Bull’s Junior Team has had years of incredible success,” he said. “Its alumni include Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen amongst many others. It is thus with great humility that Robin joins this illustrious program.”
Vettel took four consecutive titles between 2010 and 2013. Verstappen reached Formula 1 at 17. Whether Robin follows either route will not be clear for years, and Red Bull has been careful to say nothing that suggests otherwise.
