New England Revolution face Real Salt Lake in MLS matchup

Football: Revolution Visit Sinking Salt Lake

A collision of form and freefall

New England touches down in Utah as one of MLS’s hottest teams, winners of three straight and level on points with Inter Miami atop the Eastern Conference, ahead on wins alone. Real Salt Lake, by contrast, arrive at Saturday’s meeting with a record no club wants: 13 matches without a win, the longest such streak in franchise history, and nine losses spread across that stretch. RSL have also failed to score in each of their last three outings.

The gap in trajectory is stark given both sides have shared a conference all season. Real Salt Lake, now 8-13-5 for 29 points, sit outside the Western Conference’s postseason picture with little room left to recover it. New England, at 14-8-4 for 46 points, have scored multiple goals in each of their last three matches.

Gil and Miller carried the comeback, now one departs

Last Saturday’s 4-2 win over Orlando showed why this Revolution attack is dangerous late. Carles Gil and Peyton Miller both scored in second-half stoppage time, each completing a brace. Gil’s goal was his 12th of the season, a career high, and he still leads the roster with nine assists. Miller has now scored in consecutive matches, a stretch coach Marko Mitrovic pointed to directly. “These guys are very inspiring,” Mitrovic said. “Peyton is part of this group, and he’s showing great progress in the way he competes.” Miller won’t be in Sandy on Saturday, called away for U.S. men’s national team duty alongside teammates Ilay Feingold, Brooklyn Raines and Dor Turgeman.

Salt Lake’s list of absences keeps growing

RSL’s misery was compounded midweek by a 2-0 loss at Seattle, a side that had also been mired in a 13-match winless run of its own before snapping it. Forward Sergi Solans remains the one bright spot, with nine league goals and 13 across all competitions. Coach Pablo Mastroeni didn’t dress up the situation. “If you’re doing everything you can, and it’s still not enough, we’re either not good enough at the moment or we’re unlucky,” he said. “Either way, there’s only one way forward, and that’s to put your head down and keep grinding.” Diego Luna is now out for the season after knee surgery, and four more players, Juan Manuel Sanabria, Luc de Fougerolles, Saba Lobjanidze and Luca Moisa, are away on international duty.
