Stade de Reims announced Seydou Dembele’s arrival early in the afternoon. Eighteen years old, an attacking midfielder, a product of the JMG Academy in Bamako. On the face of it, just another young signing for a Ligue 2 club.
Except for the list of clubs that wanted him.
Barcelona. Chelsea. Manchester United. Fenerbahce. All of them were in the mix. The Mali international picked Champagne.

A bet on the path, not the immediate payoff
Dembele is not walking straight into the senior squad. He joins the Elite group, called Reims Revelations, the club’s setup for its young talents.
“Courted by several major European clubs, the young Malian has ultimately chosen Stade de Reims to continue his development,” the club said in its statement.
The message is clear enough. Reims didn’t sell him first-team minutes at the top level. It sold him a route.
The JMG Academy, again
The JMG Academy in Bamako keeps feeding European clubs, year after year. Dembele was billed there as one of Mali’s biggest prospects of his age group.
Foot Mercato revealed the deal two days ago. Now it is official and signed.
The hard part starts now. Plenty of players arrive in Europe with that label. Very few are still carrying it three years later.
