Interim no more
Five months ago, Chad Tracy was running a Triple-A clubhouse. Now he has the keys to Fenway for the long haul.
The Boston Red Sox announced a few hours ago that Tracy is their full-time manager, the 49th in franchise history. He signed a three-year contract that runs through the 2029 season, with a club option for 2030. Same day, same press release: Boston picked up the 2029 and 2030 options on chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. The two men are now tied together well beyond this October.
The timing is not subtle. Boston clinched a postseason berth two days ago.

From 10-17 to the playoffs
Tracy, 41, took over in April after the Red Sox fired Alex Cora. The team was 10-17 and sinking. Since then Boston has gone 74-55. Only one American League team has a better record over that stretch, and only four clubs in all of baseball do.
He was not a household name. Tracy had managed Boston’s Triple-A affiliate since 2022, after a playing career spent in the minors and independent ball from 2006 to 2014 and an earlier minor-league managing stint in the Los Angeles Angels system.
“Chad was asked to step into a difficult situation with little notice, but the trust he immediately commanded at the major league level was earned through years of work across our organization,” Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy said in a statement.
Breslow’s roster, Breslow’s reward
Breslow, 46, is in his third season running baseball operations, and he faced real questions about his own job during that ugly start. The roster answered them. Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray, both acquired by trade last winter, are expected to draw MVP and Cy Young votes. Rookie lefty Payton Tolle came through the draft under Breslow. Garrett Crochet arrived by trade and got extended, as did Roman Anthony.
At 84-72, Boston is locked in. The likely first-round opponent is the New York Yankees in the Wild Card Series, a rematch of last year, when the Red Sox went out in three games at Yankee Stadium. Tracy gets a shot at rewriting that one right away.
