Real Madrid : season likely over for Guler and Militao

Real Madrid left without Guler and Militao for the run-in

Real Madrid confirmed two more injuries on Thursday, further darkening the end of the campaign. Arda Guler and Eder Militao are both suffering from a hamstring muscle injury and are expected to miss the final weeks of the season.

According to the club medical bulletin, the Turkish midfielder has been hit in his right leg, while the Brazilian defender has suffered the problem in his left. They are expected to be out for three to four weeks, which makes a return before the end of La Liga highly unlikely.

With the league due to finish in a month, the chances of seeing either player in a Real shirt again this season look slim. It is another big blow in an already messy campaign, one that has included Champions League elimination to Bayern and a season without a major trophy.

Injuries picked up against Alaves

Both players were hurt on Tuesday during the win over Alaves (2-1). Militao had to come off just before the break after going down while trying a half-volley. For the Brazilian, it is another setback in a season that has already been badly disrupted by fitness problems. Back recently after several months out, he has barely had a chance to settle before another issue hits.

Guler, by contrast, showed no obvious signs at the time. Replaced in the 57th minute, he later felt muscle discomfort in the hours that followed. Tests carried out by Real Madrid’s medical staff confirmed the injury and ruled him out of full training straight away.

Used heavily this season, the Turkish midfielder had been one of the squad’s most reliable performers, featuring in every competition since the start of the year.

The World Cup is now the target

Beyond the club season’s finale, attention has turned to the World Cup and whether the pair will make it. The tournament starts in a little over seven weeks, which leaves some recovery time, but no guarantees.

Real Madrid will keep a close eye on both players, hoping they can get back in time for that major international showdown.
