A sporting review that points to an early shake-up
The 2025-2026 campaign is drawing to a close. Real Madrid’s hierarchy is already mapping out next season’s structure. The current numbers demand a reset. They sit nine points behind Barcelona in the league table. A quarter-final exit in the Champions League against Bayern Munich only makes the picture look worse. Two straight years without a major trophy is an unusual stat for a club of this size, and it hasn’t happened since 2006.
Head coach Alvaro Arbeloa’s future is hanging by a thread. Florentino Perez has started the process of finding a replacement. Spanish reports also suggest a possible move in the sporting department as part of a wider overhaul.
The leading names on the president’s list
Italian paper La Gazzetta dello Sport has published a report on the candidates currently being assessed by Madrid’s top brass. Didier Deschamps is officially being looked at. The thinking is that bringing in the French coach would be helped by Kylian Mbappe already being in the first-team squad.
A former club figure is also back in the frame. Jose Mourinho’s name is back on the president’s desk. The Portuguese coach is currently under contract at Benfica. His previous spell at Madrid between 2010 and 2013, plus the fact he still has a workable relationship with Florentino Perez, explains why his name keeps coming up.
The other options under consideration
Real Madrid’s recruitment team is also widening the search to other names across Europe. Jürgen Klopp’s leadership qualities have reportedly been given the nod by the club’s senior figures.
A second-tier shortlist is being kept up to date as well. The Italian outlet puts the odds below four other candidates. Massimiliano Allegri, Lionel Scaloni, Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Nagelsmann are all being treated as backup options.
