Real Madrid: Mbappe ruled out, club confirms muscle injury but gives no timescale

Mbappe hit with semitendinosus muscle injury, his spring with Real Madrid appears to be over

Real Madrid confirmed the nature of Kylian Mbappe’s injury on Monday. The France captain is suffering from damage to the semitendinosus muscle in his left leg, picked up on Friday in the game against Real Betis. The Spanish giants gave no timeframe in their statement, saying only that “his recovery will be closely monitored”.

The way he went off raised eyebrows. In the 80th minute, Mbappe stopped running without any obvious contact, then turned to the bench and asked to come off. Grimacing, he made way for youngster Gonzalo Garcia. Alvaro Arbeloa, asked about it in his press conference, did little to clear things up. “I do not know, he was in pain, and we hope it develops as well as possible in the coming days,” said the Real boss, sounding every bit as uncertain as everyone else.

At first, the club had described it as nothing more than “muscle overload in the hamstrings”, suggesting a short spell out. Monday’s update is more specific about the injury, but it still offers no real comfort on when he might be back.

In Spain, they are already writing him off for the rest of the season

Across the Spanish press, the tone is far more final. Josep Pedrerol, host of El Chiringuito, claimed Mbappe will not play for Real Madrid again this season. “The injury means he will not be able to play any longer,” he said. That view was echoed by columnist Jose Luis Hurtado in Marca, who described a “injured and frustrated” Mbappe at a club heading for yet another blank campaign.

The injury comes at a bad time. The World Cup starts on 11 June, less than two months away. Mbappe is expected to be the leader of the France team, and any setback or complication in his recovery would raise serious doubts over his place at the tournament. For now, neither Real Madrid nor the player’s camp has commented on that possibility.
