Real Madrid : Florentino Perez re-elected!

Real Madrid : re-elected, Florentino Perez is back for another term

The members have had their say, and nobody will be shocked by the result. Florentino Perez will stay in charge of Real Madrid until 2030. At 79, the Spanish chief adds another chapter to a story that already stretches well over two decades at the Madrid club. The vote, the first genuinely contested one in years, pitched the incumbent against businessman Enrique Riquelme. Despite a lively, at times feisty campaign, the gap proved too big. From the first projections, the direction of travel was obvious. A few hours later, Perez was celebrating another win in front of club members. This re-election also gives him a comfortable position with several major issues looming for Real Madrid.

The football agenda is already back on top

For several weeks, the debate has gone far beyond the boardroom. Both candidates talked transfers, sporting direction and European ambition. The pledges came thick and fast, sometimes at a pace that was hard to keep up with. Florentino Perez also hinted that Real Madrid would move quickly on several targets they have tracked for months. The names Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries kept cropping up throughout the campaign. The manager’s seat is also a major talking point. A return for Jose Mourinho, 13 years after he left, is now being talked about more and more in the Spanish capital. It would have sounded far-fetched only a few months ago.

On Riquelme’s side, the promises sometimes bordered on fantasy. Erling Haaland, Rodri, Raul and Fernando Hierro were among the names mentioned in his overhaul plan.

A term that could reshape the club

If supporters are naturally watching the incoming players, the most sensitive issue may well be happening away from the pitch. Florentino Perez wants to change Real Madrid’s financial structure by bringing in a minority investor. The idea is far from universally popular. Real have always operated with a model in which the members own the club. Changing that balance would mean tampering with one of the core pillars of Madrid’s identity.

The issue is expected to come back to the table quickly through an extraordinary meeting. This time, Florentino Perez can lean on a freshly renewed mandate to sell his plan. In Madrid, the election is already done and dusted. Attention now turns to the summer. The transfer window is closing in, the manager’s post remains at the centre of the debate and expectations are enormous. As ever with Florentino Perez, the next few weeks should be lively.
