The Diomande jackpot, latest in a long line
One season. One player. A profit of nearly 120 M€. RB Leipzig have just closed the biggest sale in their history, sending Yan Diomande to Real Madrid for 140 M€, made up of 125 M€ up front and 15 M€ in add-ons, ten of which are said to be easy to trigger. Twelve months ago they bought the Ivorian from Leganes for 20 M€.
The number is enormous, yet nobody in the Bundesliga blinked. Leipzig have spent a decade running the same play: buy young, develop fast, sell high. AS reckons the model has brought in more than 500 M€ over recent years.
Try it for $0.99.
A profit factory with a soft spot for England
The list of exits does the talking. Before Diomande, the record sat with Josko Gvardiol, off to Manchester City for 90 M€ in 2023. Benjamin Sesko took the same road across the Channel, joining Manchester United for 76,5 M€ last summer. Liverpool have tapped the pipeline for years: 70 M€ for Dominik Szoboszlai, 60 M€ for Naby Keita, 40 M€ for Ibrahima Konate.
It is not only the English coming to shop. Tottenham paid 65 M€ for Xavi Simons. Chelsea spent 60 M€ on Christopher Nkunku and 53 M€ on Timo Werner. Barcelona put 55 M€ behind Dani Olmo, while Bayern got Dayot Upamecano for a mere 42,5 M€, a player Transfermarkt now values at 75 M€.
Cash in, start over
Not every deal paid off for the buyer. Werner and Nkunku sank in London. Loïs Openda, who cost Juventus 42,75 M€, is already off on loan to Lyon. At these prices, the risk always sits with the club writing the cheque.
For Leipzig the sums keep adding up. Every big payday funds the next prospect, who then leaves for even more. Diomande is simply the newest link in a chain that already turns smoothly. As long as Europe’s giants keep knocking on the door, the German line will keep producing.
