A veteran arrives with Shesterkin out
The New York Rangers signed goaltender James Reimer to a one-year contract on Sunday. The club did not release the terms, though several outlets reported the deal is worth $850,000.
Reimer, 38, is expected to back up Dylan Garand. Garand has been the Rangers’ number one since Igor Shesterkin, a former Vezina Trophy winner, went down for the season with a knee injury.

Where Reimer has been
He played 14 games for the Ottawa Senators in 2025-26 and has made one appearance for the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL this season. Toronto drafted him in the fourth round in 2006, and he has since played for the Maple Leafs, Sharks, Panthers, Hurricanes, Red Wings, Ducks, Sabres and Senators.
His career line over 539 games reads 232-191-67 with 32 shutouts, a 2.88 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. Those are the numbers of a dependable backup rather than a starter, which is exactly the job on offer in New York.
