Five runs in one inning settled it
Texas led 4-3 heading into the fifth in Seattle and then took the game away. Ezequiel Duran drew a leadoff walk, Wyatt Langford hit a two-run shot to left off reliever Eduard Bazardo, and after a walk to Jake Burger and a hit-by-pitch on Nicky Lopez, Danny Jansen cleared the bases with a three-run blast to left-center. Six batters, five runs, 9-3.
Corey Seager had opened the scoring with a home run in the first off Bryce Miller, who fell to 4-9 and has now lost seven straight decisions since July 9. The right-hander lasted three and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Cal Quantrill went six for the Rangers, allowing three runs on five hits with a single walk and four strikeouts. That is his fourth win in five starts and moves him to 8-5.

Montes hits one nobody at T-Mobile has hit
Seattle’s rookie gave the crowd something. With two outs in the fourth and Cal Raleigh and Cole Young aboard, Lazaro Montes launched a ball 474 feet over the J-Rod Squad section in right-center and into the club seating between the first and second decks.
It is the longest home run by a Mariners player at T-Mobile Park since Statcast began measuring distance in 2015, and it matches the longest blast anywhere in the majors this season. It also cut the deficit to 4-3, which lasted about 20 minutes.
Two teams heading in opposite directions
Texas sits at 72-73, still under .500, and yet very much alive. The Rangers are two games behind Houston in the AL West and a game and a half behind Cleveland for the third wild card with a fortnight to go.
Seattle, the defending division champion, is 67-78 and has lost four of the first five games of a seven-game homestand that was supposed to keep the season breathing. The Mariners are seven back of Houston and six and a half out of the wild-card places, with four clubs stacked between them and the Guardians. The math is close to done.
