Devers will not play again this season
The mystery lasted years. It finally has a name, and it has cost Rafael Devers the rest of his season.
San Francisco moved the slugger to the 60-day injured list with a core muscle injury. Manager Tony Vitello said surgery could come as soon as Tuesday, a procedure similar to the one third baseman Matt Chapman had in August.
“I think it’s something that’s been bothering him for a few years now, and it was still a mystery to him,” Vitello said. “To finally get some relief, that’s important.”

62-88, and swept at home
The Giants sit at 62-88 and leave for St. Louis after getting swept at home by the San Diego Padres.
The three-game set against the Cardinals opens Monday night. San Francisco hands the ball to Landen Roupp (9-13, 4.00 ERA). The right-hander has allowed two earned runs total across his last three outings.
He already beat these same Cardinals last Tuesday: six scoreless innings, two hits, four walks, a 2-1 win.
St. Louis is fighting for its life
On the other side, the Cardinals (74-76) are still clinging to their National League wild-card hopes, and they want payback after that sweep in California a week ago. Oliver Marmol goes with rookie left-hander Quinn Mathews (1-3, 4.11), who gave up two runs in six innings against Roupp in that same matchup.
Alec Burleson keeps driving in runs for St. Louis. The left-handed hitter has 109 RBI, the best total in the majors, with 22 homers and a .283 average in 149 games.
