PSV beat FC Utrecht 6-1 in the Eredivisie at the Galgenwaard

Football: PSV hit six at Utrecht after falling behind early

Stepanov struck first, then PSV took over

Artem Stepanov put FC Utrecht in front inside six minutes at the Galgenwaard earlier today. Niklas Vesterlund supplied the pass, Stepanov finished, and the home crowd had a lead. It lasted about as long as it took PSV to work out where the space was.

Ruben van Bommel collected the ball at the edge of the box and drilled it into the far corner. Van Bommel had already pulled Groningen apart a week earlier in a 5-1 win. He carried that straight into Utrecht.

PSV pushed the hosts deeper for the rest of the half without converting the pressure. The lead arrived right on the interval, Sergino Dest feeding Guus Til and Til finishing.

Four goals from the 75th minute on

Peter Bosz watched his side control the second half for half an hour without adding anything to the scoreboard. Mauro Junior settled that with a free-kick fifteen minutes from time, curled in from distance.

Sven Mijnans came off the bench and won a penalty when goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas brought down Paul Wanner. Mijnans took it himself and hit the post. Moments later he struck from the edge of the area into the top corner, his first Eredivisie goal since joining the club.

Til and Dest both scored in stoppage time. Utrecht conceded four times after the 75th minute of a match they had led inside six.

Where it leaves both clubs

PSV have ten points from four league matches, two behind unbeaten leaders AZ. The reigning champions have now won three in a row after opening the campaign with a 2-2 draw against Fortuna Sittard, and their goal difference is climbing fast.

Utrecht have one point from four. Stepanov, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, already has three goals this season, which says plenty about how little is working around him. Six conceded at home leaves them near the bottom of the table with a rebuild to manage rather than a season to build on.

PSV travel to Amsterdam on Saturday for Ajax. Utrecht host Go Ahead Eagles.
