Football: PSG close in on 16-year-old Megnan-Pave

PSG move fast on a 16-year-old prospect

Paris Saint-Germain are not just busy with the here and now. The club is also working on the long-term picture. According to Foot Mercato, the Paris hierarchy are close to tying up the signing of Lacine Megnan-Pave, a striker who is only 16. The deal has moved on during the day, with Paris having already confirmed Maghnes Akliouche and Lucas Digne, while also pushing for Ferran Torres and Zion Suzuki. The Paris market is in full swing, both in and out, with the Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye cases still hanging in the balance.

A pure Montpellier academy product

Born on 7 March 2010 in Montpellier, Megnan-Pave took his first steps at ES Paulhan before joining MHSC, where he climbed every rung. The Paillade club describes him as a central striker “capable of playing with his back to goal or running in behind, while also being comfortable in combination play”. A France Under-16 international, he even wears the captain’s armband. His numbers for the national side speak for themselves: 5 goals in 10 matches. Last February, at just 15, he signed his first professional contract with Montpellier, a club known for a youth system that has produced the likes of Younes Belhanda and Remi Cabella.

A European scrap for a teenager

Megnan-Pave’s talent has not gone unnoticed by the big boys. Foot Mercato say Arsenal and Manchester United are tracking the situation too. But the player, who is still playing above his age group and has even skipped a school year, would lean towards Paris. Montpellier are said to be asking for around 15 million euros to let one of their brightest hopes go. The fee may raise eyebrows for a player this young. It says plenty about the inflation now gripping the market for top young talent, a space PSG have chosen to get into early. Nothing is signed yet. The momentum, though, is with Paris.
