Two down inside 35 minutes
Bournemouth led 2-0 at St James’ Park this afternoon. Marcus Tavernier opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Alex Scott’s shot took a deflection off Nico Gonzalez, and the winger reacted quickest to the loose ball to beat Lukas Hornicek. The Cherries doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark, when another Scott cross was diverted into his own net by Malick Thiaw.
Bournemouth’s press had Newcastle in a vice. Evanilson picked off a sloppy pass from Sven Botman before blazing over. Tavernier was denied by Hornicek after being played in by Adrien Truffert. The visitors had 13 shots before the break. That is their second-highest first-half total in Premier League history, behind the 14 they managed against Chelsea in December 2025. No away side had managed that many before half-time at St James’ Park since Leeds in September 2021.

Barnes and Ramsey haul the Magpies back
Harvey Barnes cut the deficit 101 seconds after Thiaw’s own goal. He curled a shot from the left edge of the box beyond the reach of Djordje Petrovic.
The second half was poor fare. There was not a shot on target from either side until the 88th minute. Joe Willock wasted a close-range header straight after the restart. The crowd started to turn.
Then the first shot on target of the half changed everything. Barnes’ volley was deflected into the path of substitute Jacob Ramsey. The midfielder steered the ball into the far corner. Ramsey keeps doing it: his last four Premier League goals have all either levelled the score or put his side ahead.
Bournemouth keep throwing points away
Bournemouth have become the first side in Premier League history to take the lead in each of their first three matches of a season and fail to win any of them. Marco Rose’s side were 1-0 up against Manchester City until the 84th minute on opening day before losing 2-1, then conceded a 91st-minute equaliser against Everton.
That is seven points dropped from winning positions in three games. Twice as many as any other English club before the rest of this round of fixtures. The Cherries sit 14th with two points.
Newcastle remain unbeaten under Matthias Jaissle. They have come from two goals down to avoid defeat in the Premier League for the first time since March 2024 and that 4-3 win over West Ham. The Magpies had lost their previous 15 league matches after falling two goals behind. Bournemouth, though, had the better of the expected goals battle, 1.5 to 0.66.
