First and goal at the 5, and they gained three yards
Penn State’s opening quarter in Philadelphia went like this. Missed short field goal. Punt. Tony Rojas interception that handed the offense the ball at the Temple 5, followed by three yards and a turnover on downs.
They won 27-9 anyway. Rocco Becht went 21-for-27 for 268 yards and three touchdowns. It just took most of the afternoon to show up on the scoreboard.

Brahmer scored twice, both from 23 yards
Carl Hardin put Temple ahead with a 24-yard field goal early in the second. Ryan Barker matched it from 31. Tied at three, and this was starting to look like the kind of game Penn State would hear about all week.
Then Becht found Benjamin Brahmer from 23 yards with eight seconds on the half-time clock. First lead of the day.
The third quarter ended it. A blocked Temple punt gave Penn State the ball on the 34. Becht went to Chase Sowell for 15, then 10, then hit him on a screen that went 16 yards for the score. Temple went three and out. Barker added a 39-yarder. 20-3.
Midway through the fourth, Becht came back to Brahmer for another 23-yard touchdown, this one with the tight end standing entirely alone. Five catches, 79 yards, two scores on the day.
Smolik’s return to Penn State did not go well
Jaxon Smolik spent time in the Nittany Lions program before transferring to Temple. Saturday he went 10-for-16 for 59 yards with an interception against his old team.
His legs were better than his arm: 71 rushing yards. Keveun Mason ran 14 times for 76. Temple are 1-1.
Ajani Sheppard ran in a consolation score inside the final two minutes. Carson Hansen carried 19 times for 84 yards for Penn State, now 2-0.
