Ethan Salas was not even in the lineup Wednesday night. He finished the game anyway. The rookie catcher came on for Freddy Fermin in the bottom of the 10th, fell behind 0-2, then lined a fastball into center to beat Miami 7-6 and empty Petco Park.
Jake Cronenworth had opened the inning as the automatic runner at second. A wild pitch from Josh Ekness moved him to third. Sung-Mun Song struck out. Then Salas.
Eleventh walk-off of the year for San Diego. David Morgan took the win after stranding two Marlins in the top half, and the Padres have now won 12 of 13.

Ten runs, nine walks, two starters who wanted out
Neither Eury Perez nor Casey Mize lasted. Miami’s right-hander went 4 2/3, giving up five runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Mize was the worse of the two: three innings, five hits, five runs, five walks.
The Marlins jumped out early. Three in the second, on a fielder’s choice from Joe Mack and a two-run shot by Otto Lopez. Samad Taylor answered right back with his second of the season, 388 feet to left.
Miami pushed it to 5-1 in the third before San Diego dragged itself back in the same frame. A bases-loaded walk to Cronenworth. A run for Ty France on a balk. A sacrifice fly from Taylor. Fernando Tatis Jr. squared it at 5-5 an inning later with his 24th homer of the year, 410 feet.
Three away from October
France doubled over Esteury Ruiz in the sixth to put the Padres ahead. That should have been the end of it. Griffin Conine had other plans, taking a 102 mph Mason Miller fastball out in the ninth for his 17th of the season and forcing extras.
San Diego sits level with the Chicago Cubs at the top of the National League wild-card race, 86-69, a game clear of Philadelphia. The magic number is down to three.
Miami falls to 76-79, watching a race it is no longer part of.
