A 449-foot swing that nearly wasn’t enough
Fernando Tatis Jr. put one into straight center at Coors Field on Monday night, 449 feet, his 22nd of the year. It made the score 5-1 in the second inning. San Diego still needed a closer in the ninth to get out of Denver with it.
The Padres won 8-7. Eight in a row now, their longest run of the season.
Manny Machado opened the scoring in the first with a solo shot, number 28. Colorado answered immediately on a TJ Rumfield RBI single. Then the second inning got away from the Rockies: Jackson Merrill singled to lead off, Xander Bogaerts drew a walk, Jake Cronenworth drove Merrill in, Freddy Fermin added a sacrifice fly, and Tatis finished the job.

The Rockies kept clawing, inning by inning
One run in the fifth. A two-run triple from Jake McCarthy in the sixth, then McCarthy scoring on a groundout. Cole Carrigg went deep in the seventh, his eighth of the year. Suddenly a four-run cushion was gone.
Dustin Harris doubled home a run in the eighth to give San Diego breathing room. Connor Norby took it right back. Mason Miller came on and nailed down save number 37.
Ty France and Merrill each had three hits. Tomoyuki Sugano went five for Colorado. Casey Mize matched him, eight hits and two runs allowed.
Hunter Goodman left in the seventh with a right thumb problem. He had two hits before he came out, which is the kind of night Colorado keeps having.
One game back in the wild card
San Diego sit at 82-68. That puts them within a game of Philadelphia for the second National League wild card spot.
Colorado are 55-95 and have dropped eight straight themselves. Their season ended some time ago in every sense that matters.
Twelve games left for the Padres to turn this into October.
