Baltimore lands its man
The Baltimore Orioles named Chicago Cubs executive Jared Banner their new general manager on Monday. He will work alongside president of baseball operations Mike Elias, who held the GM job himself from 2018 to 2025. The club plans to introduce Banner at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Oct. 27.
Banner has spent 18 years in MLB operations and has been the Cubs’ assistant GM since January 2024. He joined Chicago in December 2020 as vice president of special projects, then served as VP of player development from 2022 to 2023.

A résumé built in Boston
Before the Cubs came a stint in the New York Mets front office (2018 to 2020) and, before that, 11 years with the Boston Red Sox from 2007 to 2018. That Boston run included three World Series championships.
“When I first heard Mike’s vision, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of,” Banner said, calling the Orioles a storied franchise. Elias answered in kind: “He is a perfect fit to grow, evolve and improve the Orioles’ baseball operations.”
What he inherits
The job comes with a clear brief. Baltimore finished 79-82 and missed the playoffs for the second straight season. The Orioles have not reached the World Series since they beat the Philadelphia Phillies in five games in 1983, and Elias said he expects to work closely with Banner as the team builds for 2027 and beyond.
