Football stadium at night, Omonia beat Celta Vigo in the Europa League

Football: Balkovec’s late strike sinks Celta in Nicosia

Five and a half years, settled by one shot

Omonia’s last win in the Europa League proper came in December 2020. Everything since then had been qualifying rounds, early exits and nights that ended without points. That record changed a few hours ago in Nicosia, where the Cypriot side beat Celta Vigo 1-0 on the opening matchday of the league phase.

Jure Balkovec provided the moment. The full-back went for goal from long range late in the game and found the target, leaving Celta with almost no time to construct an answer.

It is the kind of result the new format was built to produce. Thirty-six clubs in a single table, eight matches each against eight different opponents, and no group to hide inside when a seeded side slips up away from home.

Celta arrived as the stronger name

On paper this was a mismatch. Celta reached the quarter-finals of this competition last season, the deepest European run in the club’s recent history, and came to Cyprus expecting to open with three points.

They leave with none, and with a goal difference already in deficit. In a table where the top eight go directly to the round of 16 and places nine to 24 are pushed into a knockout play-off round, a single dropped result in September tends to reappear in January as the difference between the two.

What Omonia have bought themselves

Three points and a clean sheet give the Cypriots a base that few expected them to have after one match. Their remaining seven fixtures will decide whether this becomes a run or stays a one-off, but the psychological value of beating a Spanish quarter-finalist at home is not nothing for a squad that had gone nearly six years without a win at this stage.
