NBA : OKC sends Aaron Wiggins to the Hawks

Thunder tighten the screws: Wiggins lands in Atlanta

Oklahoma City had too many bodies to juggle. Too many players, too much money on the books. The result? Aaron Wiggins is Atlanta-bound. The Hawks get a guard who can score and add much-needed depth to their roster. OKC lands two second-round picks and cuts its luxury tax bill from $213 million to $152 million. A tidy piece of business for everyone involved.

Wiggins is not just filler. At 27, he posted 12 points and 3.9 rebounds per game during OKC’s 2024-25 title run. Solid production. But with Ajay Mitchell rising and the financial squeeze tightening on the reigning champs, his spot was becoming harder to justify. Atlanta gives him a fresh start.

A deal that says plenty for both sides

For the Hawks, the timing works. Atlanta has just extended CJ McCollum for one season, brings in Wiggins through the $11M trade exception created by Luke Kennard’s departure, and heads into the draft with the No. 8 overall pick. Plenty of moving parts, but the message is clear: they want to build something real.

Wiggins is owed $9 million next season and $8.2 million the year after, with a team option in 2028-29. It’s an intriguing bet on his versatility on the wing. He can play alongside almost any ball-handler, and that is exactly what Atlanta needs.

On OKC’s side, keeping the payroll under control is still the priority. The Thunder still have decisions to make on the team options for Isaiah Hartenstein, Luguentz Dort and Kenrich Williams. The 2024-25 title season is costing plenty — and then some. But with picks coming back their way, OKC is still building long-term.

A quiet trade, but a telling one

This is not the kind of move that blows up social media. But it says a lot about where the league is heading as the offseason gets rolling. OKC is running its operation with a plan. Atlanta is laying brick after brick. Both franchises are moving forward, and deals like this are often where you spot the real builders.
