21 September. Batum chose that day deliberately. It is the date his father died of an aneurysm during a game, when Nicolas was two and a half years old.
The announcement came in a short clip filmed with his son in Pont-l’Eveque, in Calvados. No press conference, no statement routed through an agent. “Dad has stopped playing basketball,” he tells the camera. He is 37, and 18 NBA seasons sit behind him.
He had been out of contract since the end of June, when the Los Angeles Clippers declined their option for another year. Nobody else called.
