Down 5-1, then everything changed
Carolina trailed Nashville 5-1 in Thursday’s preseason game and looked headed for a lopsided loss. The reigning Stanley Cup champions had other plans. The Hurricanes scored five unanswered goals to win 6-5, capping the comeback with two of the most dramatic minutes of the preseason so far.
Logan Stankoven scored twice in the rally. His second goal tied the game with 1:24 left on the clock, wiping out a deficit that had stood since the second period. Felix Unger Sorum settled it with three seconds remaining, snapping a shot past the Nashville goaltender to complete the turnaround.

A signature comeback before the games count
Preseason results rarely carry weight, but a five-goal collapse and recovery inside one game tends to grab attention regardless of the stakes. Carolina lifted the Stanley Cup last season, and coach Rod Brind’Amour has used the preseason to look at depth pieces and fringe roster hopefuls rather than lean on his top line. Stankoven’s two-goal night gives him an early marker to build on heading into training camp’s final week.
Nashville built the 5-1 cushion by capitalizing on Carolina mistakes early, and for two periods the Predators controlled the pace. The final twenty minutes belonged entirely to the Hurricanes, who scored five times without reply to turn a rout into a signature win.

Thursday’s slate produced more late drama. The New York Rangers beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in a shootout, and the Columbus Blue Jackets got a goal from Valeri Nichushkin in his debut for the club following his trade from Colorado. Philadelphia blanked Boston 2-0 behind 28 saves from Joseph Woll, while Detroit needed overtime to see off Buffalo 3-2 in a game that saw Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon leave early with an injury.
