NHL: Evans scores twice as Montreal beats Chicago minus Suzuki

A road win without the captain

Montreal played Friday’s game at the United Center without Nick Suzuki, its captain and top center, who was out with an upper-body injury. The Canadiens won anyway, 4-1 over the Blackhawks, and it was their first road victory since opening night. Over their last six games they are now 4-1-1.

The start was slow. Montreal needed 3:31 to register its first shot on goal, and Connor Bedard put Chicago in front at 4:23 of the first period. Jake Evans tied it at 17:29, and from there the visitors took control. Evans finished with two goals and an assist.

The short-handed goal that changed the night

Evans’ second goal came short-handed at 7:45 of the second period. A Patrick Kane shot deflected off Tyler Bertuzzi’s skate and sent Montreal on a two-on-one the other way, and Evans finished it. Kaiden Guhle then scored his first goal of the season at 18:26 to make it 3-1, and he added an assist as well. Mike Matheson sealed the result with an empty-netter at 17:22 of the third.

Jacob Fowler stopped 20 shots for Montreal. Spencer Knight made 24 saves for Chicago, which went 0 for 5 on the power play. The last of those chances lasted only 22 seconds in the third, after Teuvo Teravainen was called for interference shortly after Juraj Slafkovsky had been penalized for hooking. Montreal was 0 for 3 with the man advantage.

The loss leaves Chicago at 2-3-0 on its seven-game homestand.
