NHL: Bruins stay alive with a 2-1 win in Buffalo

Boston refused to go quietly. With their backs against the wall heading into Game 5, the Bruins found a way to win 2-1 in Buffalo after overtime and stave off elimination. David Pastrnak, as so often in the big moments, ended it for them after 9 minutes 14 of extra time.
This result does not flip the series on its head. The Sabres still lead. But it does bring the tension back into it, at least a little. And, more than anything, it is a reminder that Boston, even when rattled, is dangerous once the game tightens up.

Buffalo struck first, though

The Sabres got off to the better start. On the power play, Rasmus Dahlin opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a one-timer at the near post. It was a big goal, almost a release, because Buffalo had been stuck in a serious drought on the man advantage.
That 1-0 lead had everything going for it. The crowd was in it, and the chance to close out the series was there too. In situations like this, an early goal often piles even more pressure on the other side.
But Boston did not panic.

The Bruins found themselves again

After the beating they took in Game 4, the Bruins needed a proper response. It was not flashy, but it was firm. Tighter, more disciplined, more patient, they played a style much closer to what they are supposed to be.
The equaliser came midway through the second period. Elias Lindholm saw his first shot turned away by Alex Lyon, then pounced on the rebound in the slot, spun and finished with ice in his veins. A goal built on persistence, and it fit Boston’s night perfectly.
From there, the Bruins really settled in. They did not dominate, but they turned the game into something far more cramped and far more awkward for Buffalo.

Swayman came through when it mattered

Jeremy Swayman was under the microscope after his rough night last time out, when he was pulled after the 6-1 blowout. This time, he answered like a goalie who understands what an elimination game demands.
He made 26 saves and was clean, calm and steady. He did not need to stand on his head, but he kept Boston in it whenever Buffalo pushed to regain the lead. In a game this tight, that was exactly the job.
Boston also defended much better in front of him. That cut down the Sabres’ long spells of pressure and gave the team back some structure.

Pastrnak punished the only mistake that mattered

Overtime was decided by one brutal swing. Peyton Krebs coughed up the puck at the offensive blue line, Hampus Lindholm spotted the opening straight away, then sent a perfect long pass to David Pastrnak.
The Czech forward was in alone, froze Alex Lyon with a slick move, then slipped the puck home. Game over. And Buffalo’s dream ending with it.
That is playoff hockey in a nutshell. One team forces it, the other breaks fast, and everything changes.
For Pastrnak, it was his second career overtime goal in the playoffs. Lindholm has assisted on both. Handy connection. Perfect timing.

Buffalo let one slip, but still holds the cards

For the Sabres, the frustration is real. They had the chance to finish the series at home, led on the scoreboard, and had chances to reclaim the lead later on. But they were off just enough in the moments that count.
Still, it is not all bad. Buffalo still leads the series and now knows Boston had to dig deep defensively just to survive. The next game will be tense, no question, but the Sabres still have another shot at sealing it.
The risk now is doubt. Let an experienced opponent breathe, and you are asking for trouble.

Boston gets one more night

The Bruins have not saved their series. Not yet. But they have found some pride, some steel, and, crucially, some oxygen.
In a series that looked ready to tilt for good, they have reminded everyone that they can still clamp things down, stay composed, and strike on a single mistake. It might only be a stay of execution. In the playoffs, though, that can be enough to change everything.
