Bell Centre was rocking on Sunday night, and the Sabres quickly realised this was going to be a long one. Even after a gut punch inside the opening minute, the Canadiens kept their cool and eventually blew Buffalo away 6-2. The convincing win gives the Tricolore a 2-1 lead in this second-round series. The crowd was fired up by the presence of legend Kirk Muller before puck drop, but it was Montreal’s attack that finished the job on the ice.

Alex Newhook: an unstoppable scoring machine

Nobody’s stopping him right now. For the second straight game, Alex Newhook lit the lamp twice. With five goals in his last four outings, the forward is flying. He levelled things in the first period before sealing it with an empty-netter. He wasn’t the only one making noise, either: Cole Caufield finally snapped a five-game drought, firing home on the power play thanks to a perfect feed from young magician Lane Hutson.

A second period for the ages

The game turned after the first intermission. Montreal scored three unanswered in a single period. After Caufield’s goal, Zachary Bolduc finished off a slick all-Quebec play started by Joe Veleno and Alexandre Carrier. Then Juraj Slafkovsky put the hammer down by tipping in a point shot from Lane Hutson, who finished the night with two assists. The Sabres looked completely out of their depth against the speed and execution of the CH.

Jakub Dobes shuts the door

Behind that offensive burst, Jakub Dobes was the steady hand Montreal needed. With 26 saves on 28 shots, the goalie repeatedly denied Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin as Buffalo desperately tried to claw back into it. Kirby Dach also got in on the act in the third period, pouncing on a loose puck behind Alex Lyon to make it 5-2. The two teams meet again on Tuesday night at Bell Centre for game four of a series that is swinging ever more heavily Montreal’s way.
