AC joint sprain with 18 days to go before kickoff
Rueben Bain Jr. is dealing with a sprained acromioclavicular joint in his shoulder. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie linebacker picked up the injury on Tuesday during the joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars. ESPN reported the diagnosis on Wednesday.
The outlook is still positive. Bain is expected to be on the field for Week 1 of the regular season, on 13 September in Cincinnati. Before then, the Buccaneers wrap up their preseason on Friday in Jacksonville, a game the 21-year-old will almost certainly watch from the sideline.

A first-round pick that says plenty about Tampa’s defense
Tampa Bay used its first-round pick on him, taking him 15th overall. That move showed a clear intent to rebuild the front seven after several seasons of uneven pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
The college resume backs up the investment. Bain was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2025, a season in which he posted 9.5 sacks and led the Miami Hurricanes to the national title game. Across 38 games for Miami, he finished with 20.5 sacks, 33.5 tackles for loss, 121 tackles, four forced fumbles and an interception.
A defense still needing time to click
The Buccaneers’ staff plans to start him right away, alongside Alex Anzalone and Christian Rozeboom. It is a blend of the two veterans’ experience and the speed of a draft pick with a reputation for wrecking plays.
The injury is a setback for the build-up. A shoulder sprain limits contact and takes valuable reps away from a rookie at exactly the point he needs to learn a pro defense. Tampa Bay is banking on 18 days being enough.
