Divorce looming at the Giants: Dexter Lawrence on the way out?
Things are getting messy between the New York Giants and the cornerstone of their defensive front, Dexter Lawrence. Contract talks on an extension have completely stalled, and talk of a possible trade is now buzzing around the Big Apple. For Brian Burns, the other pass-rush star brought in more recently, it is a hard pill to swallow. In his eyes, picturing the “Big Blue” defence without the 97 is simply unthinkable.
“Without him, the Giants lose who they are”
Brian Burns did not hold back when speaking to the New York Post. For him, Lawrence is far more than just a team-mate, he is the heartbeat of the side. “We have to find a way to keep him here, whatever it takes. He’s my brother, and I can’t see myself starting this season, or any other, without him by my side,” he said. Lawrence missing voluntary workouts has already left a huge hole in the locker room, where his natural leadership is badly missed.

Irreplaceable on the field
The fact is, Burns knows exactly what he owes his partner in crime. After a monster season of 16,5 sacks last year, the pass rusher is fully aware his success is built on Lawrence doing the dirty work in the middle. By drawing multiple blockers on every snap, Lawrence opens up huge lanes for the men around him. The numbers back it up too: once the big man leaves the field, pressure on the opposing quarterback drops off sharply.
The uncomfortable Brian Burns comparison
If Burns understands Lawrence’s frustration so well, it is because he has lived through the same grind with the Panthers before being shipped to New York in 2024 on a record deal. “I know this business’s cruelty inside out,” he said. He is trying to keep Lawrence calm amid the contract uncertainty. Even so, for all the optimism in public, the odds of Lawrence staying in New York appear to be shrinking by the day, and the Giants could be staring at a massive hole in the middle of their defence.
