A sixth-rounder for a backup arm
Jacksonville acquired quarterback Quinn Ewers from Miami earlier today, according to multiple reports. ESPN put the price at a 2028 sixth-round pick heading to the Dolphins.
Ewers arrived in Miami as a seventh-round selection in the 2025 draft. The Texas product played four games as a rookie and started three of them, throwing for 622 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. That work produced an 85.5 passer rating, respectable output for a quarterback who was not supposed to see the field in his first season.

Where he fits behind Lawrence
Trevor Lawrence remains the starter in Jacksonville. The room behind him needed reinforcing. Nick Mullens, 31, carries a 5-15 record as an NFL starter. Carter Bradley and Joey Aguilar have yet to take a regular-season snap between them.
Ewers, 23, brings something none of those three offer at his age: three starts already logged, and a body of tape from real games rather than August scrimmages. For a team whose season swings entirely on Lawrence staying upright, that distinction carries weight.
Miami thins out the room
The Dolphins keep three quarterbacks on the depth chart. Malik Willis, added this offseason, sits ahead of Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski.
Trading Ewers a day before the 53-man deadline reads as a decision Miami reached weeks ago and executed at the last useful moment. Teams tend to move surplus quarterbacks now rather than risk losing them on waivers for nothing.
Jacksonville, meanwhile, spent a late pick two drafts from now on a player who already knows what an NFL huddle sounds like. Whether Ewers ever takes a meaningful snap for the Jaguars depends on things nobody in Duval County wants to think about.
