Fifty voters becomes twenty-five
Two and a half years of internal review. That is what sits behind the announcement Canton made on Friday. Jim Porter, president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, laid out a set of board-approved changes that tear up how gold jackets get handed out. They kick in with the 2027 class.
The selection committee drops from 50 voters to 25, plus three alternates. Gone too is the rule forcing at least one voter from each of the NFL’s 32 franchise markets. Selectors will gather in person during the first week of February.
“The Hall continually reviews its bylaws to ensure the process reflects the highest standards of integrity,” Porter said in a statement.

Belichick got shut out, and everyone noticed
Timing tells you plenty. Back in February, Bill Belichick missed in his first year of eligibility. Six Super Bowl rings as head coach in New England, and the door still did not open. Around the league, people wanted an explanation.
It came down to arithmetic. Three senior candidates, one coach and one contributor were all squeezed into a window of one to three slots per year. Several voters admitted they backed the seniors, men who had waited decades already. Roger Craig, the 49ers running back from the 1980s, walked away with the jacket. Belichick did not.
That senior category is now gone. Every former player, whenever he retired, lands in one single pool. Coaches and contributors keep their own lanes.
Fifteen names, eighty percent, and a hard ceiling
The new framework runs on numbers. Between three and seven inductees each year, drawn from a shortlist of 15: thirteen players, one coach, one contributor. The threshold has not moved. Eighty percent of the vote, or nothing.
“These changes strengthen what was already working while fixing what could be improved,” Porter added. Belichick will be eligible again. Whether a smaller room votes any differently is a question the 2027 ballot gets to answer.
