Dallas settles its backup job
The Dallas Cowboys waived quarterback Joe Milton on Monday. Adam Schefter reported it first. Sam Howell now holds the job behind Dak Prescott.
Milton had made the initial 53-man roster. Dallas traded for him last offseason and carried him through camp. The staff still went the other way.

A cannon arm with almost no tape
Milton left Tennessee as a raw prospect with an enormous arm. New England took him in the sixth round in 2024 and parked him behind Drake Maye. He moved to Dallas last year and again barely played. Five games across two seasons produced 424 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer praised his progress only last week.
“I think you see Joe learning is he’s playing quarterback. And he’s playing quarterback at a high level,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s checking the ball down. He’s making blitz adjustments. He’s solving problems. He’s reading from his first, second to third, and even fourth progression at times. It takes time. You don’t stop learning as a quarterback. The only way to do it is to play. I’m really, really proud of him.”
Praise and a roster spot turned out to be different currencies.
Where he lands next
Howell brings the one thing Milton lacks. He started a full season in Washington in 2023 and threw for 3,946 yards with 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. Dallas wanted the snaps on the resume.
Milton, 26, hits the waiver wire first. Any of the other 31 clubs can claim him and his contract before he reaches the open market.
He should not wait long. Miami runs Malik Willis out front and then drops off sharply to Kyle McCord and Brady Cook. Tennessee starts Cam Ward and backs him with Mitchell Trubisky, who was evaluated for a biceps injury during the preseason. The Jets list Geno Smith and rookie Cade Klubnik, and that is the whole room.
Arm strength and legs still earn a quarterback a phone call in September.
